Discussion Questions:
Read Mark 10:35-52 as a group.
What request did James and John make of Jesus? What does it reveal about the motivations of their hearts?
The Apostle Paul spoke of looking forward to a reward that awaited him in heaven (2 Tim. 4:8). Jesus also spoke of storing up eternal treasures in heaven (Matt. 6:19-21). If pursing heavenly reward is a good thing, then what was wrong with James and John’s request?
How are you doing at storing up treasures in heaven rather than treasures here on earth? How do you know that?
Compare and contrast blind Bartimaeus with James and John. What is similar? What is different?
In what ways is Bartimaeus a model for how people should approach and make requests of God?
Even Christians can be blind to indwelling pride. What can you do to help shed light regularly upon the motivations of your heart?
Bartimaeus disability was the very thing that led him to Jesus. Have their been similar trials in your life that have done the same for you? Share them with your group.
